@diver saidSpain scored with plus 8 left. 2-1 Spain of course.
I think I’m rooting for both teams as I’m conflicted.
On the one hand I’d like to see Belgium fulfil their potential; but on the other hand I once had a Belgian boss who was an arrogant asshat. Petty I know.
I also like Spain for holidays 😅

@YolandaBKL saidThey’re clearly ‘good’; but to my way of thinking they aren’t the dynamic expansive force they were two years ago when they beat England in the EURO 2024 final. I may be proven wrong after the semi final with France.
Can’t figure out if Spain are good or not.
For me they are solid at the back (despite the excellent Belgium goal), they are well organised, experienced and resilient.
Yamal has been a disappointment so far and they will need him to mature and deliver against a superb France team.
@Very-Rusty saidGood to see you enjoying the football Rusty.

I know the game doesn’t have the points of US ‘football’ nor the goals of Ice Hockey; but once you get the gist off ‘UK’ football (pardon my nationalising it) you might see that it has wonderful nuances and excellent tactics.
@diver saidYes, I am getting to enjoy it more now as I have a little better understanding and see the Tactics and Stratagies by each Team.

Much rougher than I had assumed it was now that I am paying closer attention to it. Spain beat out Belguim so I am going to have to pick another one now.
All the heavy weights are playing now . (The Giants of the game)!!!!

@Very-Rusty saidIt is very physical but the players rolling around, screaming and diving hasn’t helped the credibility.

The difference from rugby for example, (also American football) is that in those sports tackling is aimed at the upper body, below the neck and (impact) above the knee. The challenge with football is that most of the force of a tackle is between the knee and the foot; very vulnerable joints. Hence why the rules are very very strict on lunging tackles which may be aimed at the ball but land on the knee, shin or ankle.

I remember the red card an American player got for stepping on an ankle in a game and that meant he was suspended for the next game. Trump called the FIFA President and had it looked into so the story goes, and a commitee they clain over ruled it. The Americans still lost their next game even with the reversal in the red card. Politics shouldn't enter the game!!!!
You were correct by the way the more one watches the game the more you understand it.

One thing I think the US team learned - they are not quite ready for prime time. Nice try, America.
The punishment for a red card is way over the top.
And did somebody say "flopping"?? My god, talk about Hollywood actors.
And we could see the top 4 teams in the world in the semi's. We'll find out soon enough
This is Biff Barf, in sports
@Earl-of-Trumps saidThe flip flopping around like that they call embellishment in hockey and a 2 minute penalty is given out for that. The Team plays a man short for 2 minutes, that probably wouldn't matter much in Football/Soccer. I saw a Team play 2 men down in one game.

I don't see how the person can be flip flopping around like they are severely injured then up and running all out 1 minute later.
I am sure many of those players could win awards for their acting abilities. Other than that I do enjoy the matches.

@Very-Rusty saidonce England go out i always support the underdog (some would say England are the underdog compared to some of the teams left🤣), when i got Cabo Verde in the work sweepstake i thought great the worst team in the tournament, how wrong i was Cabo Verde were amazing and shows that an expanded world cup, despite my original apprehensions, is a good idea otherwise these teams would never qualify

I am still learning many of the big names and Giants of the game. I just enjoy watching. Because of interactions with @Ghost I will not be saddened to see England go. As you say some would consider them an underdog anyways.

@Very-Rusty saidEngland are seeded 4th in the tournament.
