WOW! So FilmFour is starting on Freeview tomorrow and I was expecting it to be filled with really crappy films all day, but it actually looks like it is going to show to top notch films regularly. If you don't have freeview, get it just for this.

Films showing in the first week include:

Lost in Translation
Sexy Beast
Strictly Ballroom
Fifth Element
Elizabeth
Zoolander
Road to Perdition
Apocalypse Now
Having seen all of those but 'Elizabeth', I deem three of them excellent, three mediocre, and one horrifically bad.

I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about Sexy Beast (it was edited out of your quote). Purely because in the run up to FilmFour being introduced, there was a programme on the 50 must see movie before you die. Lost in Translation and Sexy Beast were both in the top 10 and Apocalypse Now was first.

edit: One of the film critics said you will ...[text shortened]... s it will be able to tell you catagorically why they loved or hated it. So why did you hate it?
Sexy Beast wasn't that good.

Lost in Translation I hated. It was hyped up to be soooo funny and such a good movie, but it wasn't. I had a hard time following everything.

You can't deny that they've put together a diverse and interesting film list, though. Something for everyone, I'm sure
Lost in Translation
Sexy Beast
Road to Perdition

I do agree with that, it is a fair list, just saying I would only watch three of them. I'm not a great fan of films as I get bored with watching things that are longer than an hour if it doesn't keep me interested.

You wouldn't watch Apocolypse Now?

It was advertised as being advertising for FilmFour! And I personally see nothing wrong with that. The top films certainly were very influencial and could be considered must see in one way or another, and the fact that at least 3 of the top 10 films will be on FF in the first couple of days says a lot about the quality of films the new channel is going t ...[text shortened]... not to see Full Metal Jacket in there at all, when I would have put it straight into the top 5.
I must have missed to obvious ad. Still, the countdown 'as is' is a little flawed when you consider the link to the Film4 schedules. I suppose any film that is noted for its absence is as a result of Film4 not getting the rights to screen it!

I'm sure that there are many films deemed worthy but not present in the countdown.

Do you think that they created the list first, and then acquired the rights or picked the 50 from films they are going to show anyway? Which way round, do you think?

I am pretty sure that they created the list first, this being because many of the films that were towards the top are not being shown, as well as some of the films being shown not being in the list. The films that were on the list are very influencial and should be seen before you die, so I see no reason to believe that there was some type of "fix" involved.

Sexy Beast is a good film, with an excellent soundtrack, and some excellent lines in it.

Ben Kingsley turns in a fine performance as Don, his argument scenes with Ray Winstone are hilarious.

Great news about film4, really looking forward to this, out of the list given :-

Lost in Translation - very good, loved this movie
Sexy Beast - a must buy, if you can get past the swearing, some great performances
Strictly Ballroom - not a bad movie,
Fifth Element - bit dated, hated the bits with Chris Tucker in
Elizabeth - a lot better than expected
Zoolander - crap movie, complete waste of time
Road to Perdition - very good graphic novel adaptation, one of Tom Hanks best movies.
