Now of course you are going to be pining for a good printer. I see
some Hp's are coming out with 4800X1200 resolution and they have
some newer inks that supposedly last a hundred years, unlike regular
cheapo printers that may look good originally but a couple of years
later its like disappearing ink.
Now you also need a nice fat hard drive to hold all those thousands
of picsπŸ™‚ The best thing about digital is not being stuck with dozens
of dodo prints that didn't come out. Digital photo editing software
is getting really good at the hundred dollar level, taking care of such
things as red-eye and under or overdeveloping. Also you need a
DVD burner to make backups cause sure as you're born, you get
a nice batch of photos built up and the hard drive starts flaming and
Phht, there goes your photos. There is some free software out there
like Test Disk 9 that can restore a lot of problems with supposedly
dead hard drives but its always best to have your precious pics backed
up on DVD's. DVD burners are under a hundred bucks now and the
newest ones record dual layer which means you get over 9 gigs of
storage rather than the original ones that held 4.7 Gigabytes.
Thats 4700 megabytes and thats a lot of photos even with single
layer drives but get one! then get some backup software like
Norton's Ghost which will allow you to back up everything on your HD
or bits and pieces, your choice. If you get a DVD RW, you can use it
time and time again with incremental backups which means you don't have to have a whole truckload of DVD R's around everytime you need
to back up something new. Good luck. You have just entered a never
ending world of upgrades! BTW the bastids kids are also being charged
with ethnic intimidation and assault and harrassment just like the
mother from hell.

Bunk. Save you're money for storage. Everybody and their cousin is doing prints from digital these days. And if you compare per print costs, there's no way you can afford to do your own.

My wife and I got a 6 Megapixel Nikon digital SLR about a year ago and love it (I'm guessing we got it for the same reason as you did, capturing LOTS of baby pictures). The key feature is speed (I think it's called shutter lag and is caused by the speed of the autofocus system). At any rate, a lot of cheaper cameras are slow and cause you to miss that elusive smile. Hopefully your's isn't slow, or you'll either be very disappointed or be shooting a zillion pictures to get the shot you're after. Either way you'll very soon have thousands (no joke) of pictures to store, and making CD or DVD backups is an excellent idea. I also recently installed a backup harddrive which is exclusively used for photo backups--this was prompted by a hard-drive crash which made me ponder just how messy it is to recover all those photos from CD's.

Anyway. Good luck with the new camera! πŸ™‚
