I love firefox with all my heart. But now, every second sentence I type (and believe me....I type a hell of a lot of sentences a day) some display pops up at the bottom and the typing progresses in that?!?!?

Does anyone know how to shut this torture off?

How can I get Firefox to stop consuming enormous amounts of memory?

Strange - do you mean ALL typing opens up a new window?

No.
It just started today and it only happens when I'm typing a message in a chess game.

It's sort of like an extra horizontal window at the bottom of the screen (parallel to the Start thing where you see all the fields you have opened), which stretches from left to right.
It's the same height as the bottom "Werkbalk" (I don't know what the English term for it is).

The typing continues in little red letters in (I know this sounds like I'm on drugs...) said "window" and there's a couple of buttons there as well.

Kinda sounds like the 'Find in this page' function you access from the 'Edit' button at the top.

Have you solved it yet? It does sound like the searchbar, accessible through ctrl+f. Don't know what your keyboard layout is like, but is it possible you accidently hit ctrl+f, when attempting something else. If I do that now... yes, I end up in the searchfield.

Yes! It's the CTRL + F field we're talking about. (I just tested).

I don't know if the problem is solved, because nobody's moved in a chess game yet...

But, considering I don't get it when I'm typing regularly, I'm sure it isn't me mistakingly typing wrong keys. I type extremely fast and nearly faultless.

Normally, if that's happening, you just got to restart firefox.

Perhaps you have enabled the "find as you type" function. If so you can disable it in:
Preferences ->Advanced -> Begin finding when you begin typing
