since a system update yesterday... so i go to system restore to try and get it back to before yesterday but it won't let me, can only restore the computer to yesterdays update.

i also received a firefox update during that time, apparently i'm on firefox 3.0.17... but i'm sure i was using 3.3.??... i've tried to download firefox 3.5 but it won't let me, stalls halfway through each time.

avg is also not working and it won't let me install avg 8.5. but other than that everything is working.

what should i do?

I've had no problems with MS update, so I can't say specifically if anything is wrong.

Download Revo Uninstaller and clean out AVG and FireFox.
Get FireFox 3.5.7 and I think AVG is on v9 by now... I use Microsoft Security Essentials now.
Do a cleanup with CCleaner, including the registry.
Reinstall FireFox and AV.

Weird, are you sure this isn't a virus of some sort? I had an update this morning an it's working fine.

Did you try uninstalling FF altogether?

It runs through your hard drive and registry and tries to find any 'left-overs' related to the program.

They had a lot of problems with firefox 3.0.0x and 3.0.1x, so I hope you still have another browser to download a newer version.

Ccleaner does that.

With CCleaner I always have to do a registry scan after uninstalling because of that.

Edit: Hop, does it do it automatically when I uninstall?

No, it'll just run the applications uninstall function, so you'll still need to clean the registry seperately.

There are ways to download firefox through your command prompt, but they're specific to your operating system and you'll have to try a few different things before you get it right. The best thing to do is google search "download firefox command prompt" and go through a few options, they're usually step by step instructions. Make sure you enter the latest FF version in the last step as some of the instructions I've seen are a little old.
