I like firefox for my web browser but was running an outdated version (2..0.0.3) with plenty of add-ons, themes, etc. So I decided I probably should upgrade to a newer version.
I came across version 3.6 but after installing it I encountered problems at times where it freezes up, and also several of my add-ons and themes no longer work with the newer version.
So now I'm considering going back to an older version but hopefully something newer than 2.0.0.3 .
I thought perhaps some other firefox users may have some thoughts or recommendations on what version would be good. I run windows XP on a laptop HP pavilion if that makes any difference. Any advice on some useful add-ons and extensions would be nice too.

It was the last stable release so it should be widely available and most addons/themes should work with it.

I still run 3.5 on all my PCs and it works great - albeit slow starting with a million add-ons installed...
Maybe, if you really struggle, you should consider doing a 'clean' install?
Find the plugins etc. you can't live without on addons.mozilla.org, completely uninstall FF and start from scratch.

Go through your add-ons and only leave the ones you absolutely cannot live without, cut the others. Also, consider installing Google Chrome. I start it with Windows for the pages I need ASAP while I wait for FF to finish loading.
I'm also trying this out tomorrow: http://prism.mozilla.com/features/
