okay-so i finally get myself connected to the internet via my *new* laptop, through my uni's resnet service thingy. they've provided me with a security patch for WinXP, and F-secure, and i know that winXP has it's own in-built anti-virus thingy, or a firewall, or something along those lines. however, do i need anything else? preferably something i don't have to pay for type thing...😛
As for firewalls, they say that ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com) is the best. However, I found that it stopped too many things, like MSN voice-chat (maybe it was me, but I never managed to make it work).
I now use Kerio Peronal Firewall (www.kerio.com), which passes all internet open port-tests (where you can check if you have any open ports where anyone can enter your computer), but still lets through things like voice-chat.
Both have a free personal edition and a professional edition which costs money. In both cases the firewall functionality is the same, with the prof. ed. you get more options for logging monitoring etc.

Also, there's a bunch of freebie's over at download.com (of cnet fame).
I've also heard some good stuff about Black Ice.
Originally posted by pidermanI never really got to grips with ZoneAlarm either. Have found Sygate Personal Firewall Pro a little more intuitive.

genius, I'm guessing that you access the internet through a university proxy server. More knowledgeable people will be able to give you a better answer but at the proxy server level there is probably certain levels of protection put in place by the university to protect its network.
As a general point, my understanding is that a well set up hardware firewall will provide more protection than a software one.
