A nice slow opening. No tricks, no traps, slow maneuvering.
Of course he has the advantage though. For now.

Still can't stand asparagus. Can't stand the look of it, the smell of it, the taste of it.

Understood. Took a caring wife who knew her way around the kitchen to change my early imbedded point of view.

Forget the oversize, gnarly bunches. Go for vibrant color and fresh baby spears no larger than a slender stalk of celery. Preferably steam. Alternatively, cook briefly with the least amount of water possible. Serve immediately with lemon butter, pinch of sea salt and coarse ground pepper. Goes especially well with some delicate seafood and light chicken dishes, with a dry white wine. An acquired taste worth acquiring in my opinion. Main consideration is not to overcook them. If you do, backup plan is to find an uncomplicated receipe for asparagus chowder. Be brave and daring. Challenge your longstanding impressions. Cheers!

Why an aversion to celery?
I don't like the smell or the taste, although I do think it looks and sounds good and I know it's a healthy and versatile food.
At the thought of eating it I can feel my throat closing and the feeling I will be sick. 🙁 (make that a green smiley)

I can't stand testicles. I once went to spain for a while, and there I got the aversion against it.

I worked in an office outside a bull fighting arena. I always ate lunch at a small restaurant where they served lunch. I didn't know mych spain at those days, so I pointed and got what I wanted. Or thought what I wanted anyway.

One monday at another table they got some meaty round things. They looked like they liked it, and they looked quite tasty. So I pointed and got one. One's enough because they was quite big. They tasted quite nice but I didn't know what they were, and they were served at mondays only.

After a while, when I got the hang of the language, I asked what it was, and they said it was bulls testicles. (Oh?) Yes, after the sunday's bull fight they got the balls from the animals, fried them and served them. Eh, okay... But they were good so I kept ordering them every monday.

One monday I ordered it as I usually did. But this day I got two of them, smaller ones, different tasting. So I asked the waiter. His response: Well, yesterday... (Yes?) Ahum, yesterday, the bull won the fight.

I cannot stand testicles anymore...

btw what's the craic with the asparagus bashing in this thread? peel the skin off the bottom and fry in butter with just a little olive oil to stop the butter from burning. simple and delicious.

i can't think of any foods i wouldn't eat but now enjoy, would usually try anything... tastes do change though so i probably like some things i didn't used to.

what about things that you hated as a child and still HATE today?

mayo
cabbage
cauliflower (although pureed, seasoned and with cream is nice)
salad cream. if there is a hell, mine will be force fed salad cream for all eternity... seriously vomit food. even the smell makes my stomach turn. EW. i'd rather have someone foot stuck in my mouth than to eat this stuff.
