It didn't stop, it's just in our minds that America is USA.
It's somewhat similar - perhaps - to how many Americans refer to the United Kingdom as "England". An interesting thing about "the U.S.A." is that, unlike nearly all other countries around the world, its official demonym is at the root of the confusion. No "Columbians" are going to say "Hey, don't call me a Columbian, I'm an American in Columbia", not in a regular conversation, anyway.

Colombians are most certainly going to say 'don't call me Columbian'.

And yet their demonym is "Colombian"? Have some Colombians been telling you their national demonym is "American"?

My main point was the spelling, that you've corrected. But yes, for them it's the same as us being European. They're Colombian and American. Like I'm Irish and European. And you're Antarctican and Antarctican? 😂

OK, thanks.

They're Colombian and American.
Pretty much all the South Americans I've met described themselves as South American.

The Canadians I've met on my travels have been at pains NOT to be seen or described as being Americans.

Because they know you think American is just USA.

Because they know you think American is USA and they don't want to be seen as from USA. See the post by Stees.

South Americans identify as South Americans because "American" is the demonym for citizens of the U.S.A.

Canadians introduce themselves as Canadians because "Canadian" is their demonym.

The notion that all people of North and South America are "Americans" is indeed TRUE but it is a "truth" that is on the pedantic I-watched-a-National-Geographic-documentary-last-night water-cooler/ cigarette-break chat fluff level.

Like I introduce myself as being Irish, but I'm still European. Same difference.

It's not.

Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, South America etc. becomes European, North American, Asian, African, South American etc. Yes you are Irish and European. A Colombian is a Colombian and a South American, historical rhetoric about The Americas and The New World notwithstanding.
