Franklin's better half...

Franklin's better half sure was on her game the day she said: "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."

On any day at random, wonder how Eleanor would distribute the mix of all threads and posts on this general forum between these three categories.

What say you?

Favorably recollected her often quoted observation and it's still durable implications to this forum (which a bright guy like you obviously knew).

Quite often, it's impossible to discuss an idea without also discussing certain events and certain people at the same time. Perhaps Eleanor Roosevelt was able to compartmentalize better than most of us.

Pigeon hole the simple words any which way you wish. Probably best for you to remain in a detached comfort zone, rather than discuss the quote.

Your comfort zone seems to be argumentum ad hominem, Bobby.

I believe that great minds discuss ideas as well as events and people. Small minds discuss only people.

You know, Mr. Andy, all my life I've enjoyed people, conversation and earnest competition. It's still a daily high even chatting in cyberspace,

learning from others, swapping thoughts, appreciating different points of view, unique play of mind and what makes others tick. Sort of like

summer ping pong. You serve, you return. You both get a decent workout and work up a little sweat. Nobody gets hurt. Then after a cold one

talking about world events, maybe a few hearty laughs and tossing a football around... going long for a few Hail Marys in the refreshing pool.

I don't believe it's true that small minds discuss only people. They might discuss people, stamps, the weather or Kant's categorical imperative. I think the size of the mind isn't defined so much by the range of things people discuss as by the ability to see connections, to see both the big picture and the details, to question things, to think creatively, and to keep your mind open and flexible.

Great minds can make discussing people interesting and educational, while small minds can make discussing ideas boring and useless.
