From another thread just remembered a little 'trick' from school days for translating some French words.

If the vowel in a French word has a hat put an s after it to get the English word (or near approximation).

côte coste coast
hôtel hostel
pâte paste
forêt forest
bête beste beast
rôti rosti roast

Bosse de Nage
Zellulärer Automat

You're right. The accent, called a circumflex, denotes that at one time there was an "S" at the end of the word.
