Oh, no, it's not enough that viruses are hard to replicate on their own. The latest ones TELL YOU HOW TO OPEN/INSTALL THEM. Duh. I knew this was coming. Frankly, I'm just fed up with it. Really.
If you didn't ask for an attachment, chances are you shouldn't OPEN the attachment.
Encrypted zips don't get parsed by antivirus. So the email message tells you the password so YOU can propogate the message manually.
This is EXACTLY what I've feared would happen, no matter what operating system they're using. With enough instructions and FUD, an end user will do ANYTHING that a message asks, if the message is urgent enough, or even obscure enough: This is the document you've been waiting for.? What?
Sorry. I'm a computer guy and I have to just vent. I am absolutely NOT referring to any one on RHP. Don't even think that I am, because it's not true. I'm just venting because I need an out. After all this, I think there is justification for end users to be punished for stupidity, just like letting a crocodile into a sewer, a ferret on the loose, or a pit bull off a leash. ARGH!
No, it's not the fault of the virus writers, and it's not the fault of the Antivirus people. Not when the end user FOLLOWS INSTRUCTIONS on HOW TO INFECT his own (and others) computer.
Thanks.
I received (not caught) a nice virus which was spamming <everyone>@redhotpawn.com.
Obviously it was really targeted at ISPs, and no one else got spammed but me, but the message text explained it was was from the 'RedHotPawn.com support team'. I did a double take when it arrived.
Far too convincing.

Originally posted by RussI received a message this morning with attachment entitled "Virus warning - urgent - open immediatly" from some guy I didn't know. I smelt a rat and deleated it. I only found out later that it was a real warning from the head of IT in the USA 😳

Nice venting, hope you feel better 🙂 But,uhm, isn't it always the fault of the virus-writer?No writer....no virus...eh?
You may say, 'But hold on! Gun manufacturing is legal!' and I say, so what? An end user, knowledgeable or not about the usage of [insert potentially destructive device] who uses said device is pretty much solely responsible for the effects of its use.
'It will get rid of your problem'
'I'm not sure I have a problem, but ok... Hey, I have a problem!'
'Told you!'
Originally posted by RussI just got one from the ids team. ids is my net provider... but the message came from miken@lendingprofessional.com if I track the properties.

Should I bother to email the guy, or just ignore the message? I sure as heck am not going to use the password he gave me to open the zip!
