Thanks for your suggestions.

I don’t think anything quite has the appeal of chess. And fortunately, it is not copyrighted.

Of the many possibilities I have considered, a large proportion would have to be discarded beacause of copyright.

I do have a ‘vision’ of a turn based war/strategy game. Each game being played out on a vast map, with a large number of participants, and each player having a large number of units. This is an original idea – and therefore would require lots of research to polish the design. Although this kind of thing appeals to me, I’m not sure about the rest of the world’s population. I suspect the only way to find out is to prototype it. (I own the domain name geobattle.com – the most likely name for this project if it ever gets off the ground.)

That sounds complicated. But if you get it to work... 😀😀😀😀😀

At the extreme, you could have just one continuous game, ending when it is clear who has won. If so, I would suggest that instead of giving individual players units, you have a number of 'powers', each controlled by many players, and then ways for players to vote on who controls what. Each power would also have a private 'war room', and possibly a president (eg elected by the other players.) This way, if a player becomes inactive or deliberately sabotages the team's efforts, the others can agree to kick him out, or they could agree on a scheme where if one of them doesn't move for a certain time, a designated other player gets to control their units for them temporarily.

I think that would be fascinating. I have been a longtime fan of the Avalon Hill line of strategy games, such as: Squad Leader, Blitzkrieg, Midway, Battle of the Bulge, etc. I have also played several of the Talonsoft turn based strategy computer games. But It's almost impossible to find people to play these games face to face, and I haven't had much luck in finding an online site for this type of game either. Not one that a Mac user could interface with anyway. If you could implement something like that it would bring tears of joy to my eyes.

It would be of particular interest to see how those are very well schooled in chess would do in a turn-based wartime strategy game. See how well those chess skills translate to a more complicated system. I'd be interested as well.

I invented a game (name too rude to print here) that is actually quite interesting from a strategic point of view in that it one must determine when to cooperate with other players, and when to screw them over. It is played with playing cards, or coins, or things of that nature, and requires exactly four people. I only played it once. It's actually quite fun, though.

I also like Go quite a bit, but I've only played twice (that is to say, I've only devoted 16 hours of my life to playing it 😉)

Sounds good!! 😀

Judging from itsyourturn.com games like go, battleships and chess variants would be popular (and they claim to have 1.4m members despite a far inferior interface and "feel" to the site).

Has anyone tried to put card games like bridge, whist and (my old favourite) Black Maria on the internet?

Mick 🙂

One of the best turn based games on he web I have played (and am playing) is NemesisWar. Its a strategy/space combat game. A lot of fun and the community is very nice. Good people there. They are right now installing new add-ons to the game so the new one will start on the 11th week. More on the game can be read from:

nemesiswar.webhop.net

Its way more involved than chess of course and can't be compared to a board game but a lot of fun nevertheless... Check it out 😉

I was just having a good old ponder about the world, life and everything, but after 30 seconds, I got bored and started thinking about how to implement the new features I am adding to the site.. (this often happens, just ask my girlfriend. Sorry darling, I do listen to you honest….😉 )

I then had a bit of a penny dropping moment – a lot of work ...[text shortened]... Not an easy question to answer.

I would be very interested in your thoughts/ideas.

Is it not an easy question to answer?
