Maybe he did have a good reason, but being told by a friend who is a lawyer is not the same as official confirmation. My quick googling seems to show that while many believe it to be true, it is just another myth.
While the Queen does own a huge amount of land (personally), the Crown Estate (which
nominally belongs to the crown) in practice "cannot be sold by him or her, nor do any revenues, or debts, from the estate accrue to the monarch, as they no longer govern in person." As Wikipedia goes on to explain, "that role has been replaced by the de facto authority of Parliament."

And finally, while the Crown Estate does own a
huge amount of land, it is by no means "every inch" of the UK. It equals 240,000 hectares, plus about 55% of the UK's foreshore, and virtually all of the sea bed around the UK.
The UK's area is 323,000 hectares of water and 24,159,000 hectares of land.
