Is it not good manners to say "hello' or "Good Luck" on your opening move.
I cannot believe how rude the players are on this site - ok - no chat DURING a game - but a POLITE "hello" etc is still surely good manners.
Mmmm....is this a Gee-up?
Honestly dude, u've been on the RHP site 4yrs 2 the day....& u bring it up NOW!!!
Ok, jokes over, u can come out now....this is a Gee-up right???
Yeah nah it depends on who ur playin' of course, & of how they feel when invited. Look I'm sure there's a thread about what ur on about, somewhere in the archives....it basically covers what u said & then some.

Sorry "man" - where I come from "manners maketh man"
Does it hurt to be polite?
You and I haven't played for a while.
Gimme a dingleberry... I'm all floppy ears!
But yeah... there are an excessive number of morans out here in RHP-land.
Could be the natural cyber-anonymity... Could be they really don't have lives.

I used to routinely wish my opponents well, say hi etc at the beginning of a game until one guy accused me of sending him a virus along with my customary greeting. Nevermind the fact that even if I had wanted to do that, it's impossible (according to Russ); I sent him a virus and that's that (the truth according to Mr. Whacko)
I just assume that everybody new is a mental case and make my moves.

Originally posted by MartinSI think you may be judging Internet behaviour using face-to-face criteria. Though I agree that in the real world one would say 'hello' to one's opponent, I'm not sure it's reasonable to expect this in an Internet chess site.

Originally posted by MartinSKeep in mind you have a relatively low gameload. There are players who are much more active and have games starting up all the time; I'm willing to pardon them for not wanting to bother with a greeting at the start of every single game.

Personally, I rarely bother to initiate a first-move greeting anymore, because I noticed that when I was doing it, I was using the same exact greeting for every game; I guess that's what Coconut mant when he was referring to stock greetings. To me it just reeked of insincerity, so I decided that if I wasn't going to bother with coming up with a different greeting each time, it wasn't worth doing at all. However I will still send a polite reply if someone wishes to extend me that courtesy.
I usually start off every game with a hi good luck and whatnot if they answer then thats cool if not then thats okay as well... its their chocie.... also I tend to joke around in the game quite a bit if people reply to my quips then I usually start a conversation if not I know they don`t like talking during the game and usually stop... I prefer to talk during the game gives me a sense that i`m actually meeting people rather than just using a chess site...

Ok - It seems I expect too much from someone to simply say "Hello" or "Good Luck" -
Sorry Guys - I think that it is really bad manners not to extend a friendly greeting.
2) I've played many people who didn't speak a word of English.
Relax.
