I couldn't believe how easy it was to go into my address and actually get pictures of my flats, close up of my balcony, and then be able to move down the road to the beach almost like a grand theft auto game was incredible.
How do they get all those pictures?
Are some parts of the world better mapped out than others?
Are some maps restricted? (for 'security' reasons? )
Depends on where you are. I can "drive" along the main road but can't "turn" into my own side road, because the Google Street View camera vehicle didn't. They turned into an earlier side road and came into my road via a cross-street, so our stretch (about a mile) isn't covered. Town areas have been well done in most places in Australia. No sign of Mr Google Street View in Baghdad, can't say I'm surprised.
Originally posted by KewpieLol, same situation with my road. Another iteresting thing about my area is that several bridges are still out, though they've been fixed for nearly 2 years. I used the maps to find someone's house i was visiting and drove 15 miles only to realize when I got near it I live about 6 miles away over a bridge an up a back road.

Google Earth is even more impressive .. fly over NY City and see the skyscrapers in 3D just below you.
Our area has been well covered by aerial surveys, so Google Earth resolution is sharp along the coastal areas, but deteriorates rapidly where the low-height overlays aren't available. One side of my road (my side) is 2005, the other side (where there's been a bit of development recently) is 2011, and the two films don't quite match along the road.
I've also noticed our GPS often thinks we're driving in the field alongside the road, not on the road itself ...
Originally posted by karoly aczelThey literally have cameras on vans driving around to create google earth street images. I can see people in know getting in and out of their cars outside their homes in some locations, as the van has driven past.

I do wonder when they'll have elevated cameras to look in bedrooms..... 😀 😀

Thnx for the responses. I think I get a better idea now.
I know we've had this for awhile, but it was not until I tried it again the other day that it worked so quick and smoothly.
Looking at the picture more closely it looks like it was taken before I moved in here.
I wonder how long before "the vans" come past again ??

There were a couple of divorce cases citing the evidence of a vehicle parked at a house where it shouldn't have been. So now they blur the number plates.
