Everyone is a cheat now.

I'm sorry you wish to go and hope you don't. I have enjoyed our games and conversations.
I did not speak up in the forums and defend you for a variety of reasons, some good some
marginal.
One, I always forget people have thinner skin than me; for me, someone I've never physically met
trashing me on an electronic forum is something I may respond to in the same media, but nothing
I would take too personally. So I must have underestimated how hurt you were by the accusation.
For that I apologize.
Second, as I posted earlier in relation to this whole issue, I've felt that if the "rest of us" joined in,
the backlash from Dave's original accusations would simply engulf the forum, which it has. Oh well.
Since everyone is attacking everyone, I might as well jump in too.
As far as no one defending you; I apologize for not doing that publically. I can say that I have
done so (and am doing so) privately.
I can say that I didn't personally consider the fact that you've shared passwords to accounts with
others to be much of a big deal. (And hoping I am remembering the original issue, so much is
flying around I can't keep it straight.) Granted, if you were doing that for the purpose of allowing
someone else to play your games for you, that would be very wrong and you should be
condemned, but I was presented with no evidence that you did that for such a reason.
I take at face value your claim that you did simply to make it easier to set up particular openings. I
take that at face value because I considered doing the same thing with (one) of my alternate
nicknames, good old Ron Jeremy. And I considered doing it BECAUSE it was just so darn hard to get
two players to get a handful of games to the same spot; and it was obviously MUCH EASIER for just
one of us to go in, play both sides quickly to where we wanted to be, and then let the other player
take over. And the only reason I didn't do that was because the other player lost interest in RHP.
It never for once crossed my mind that sharing access to an account was "wrong" in and of itself.
Since I have never seen a "thou shall not share passwords", I won't consider it a crime. Instead I
consider it an approach to getting around the problem that we can't set up boards here with starting
positions several moves in. Indeed, I've often thought it would be nice if in the open forums, I
could post a game thats several moves in and say, "Anyone want to play white in this Nadjorf
Sicillian". But we have no way of doing that, so folks get creative - one creative way is to share a
password. Whoopdeedo.
And yes, I know that many others here may think "well, if Michael says he thought of sharing
passwords too, then all he's done is show he's got low ethics too." To that; oh well.
Well, I'm not being as coherent as I wish to be. All I know is that I don't think you should go.
And the other thing I know is that I consider both you and Dave friends, and would regret losing
either.
Michael
Lyn and Michael,
I am very pleased that you are playing against me. I don't care
about ratings or if someone is using computer. If I would play
against a computer, it will be only me who will improve my game, not
the person using help.
I have been traveling during the last two weeks, but I will be around
during the next week for some quicker moves.
I am here to play chess, nothing else.
You can e-mail me at:
heloranta@pssd.com
if you don't want to post your messages in the forum.
Sincerely,
Harri
Well said Michael...I've read most of the posts over the past week or
so and have been wanting to chime in but I just don't have the
time/energy to do it. I consider all parties involved as friends of mine
(although have not had much opportunity to get to know Janey) so it's
not fun to seem them going at it as they have.
I don't think it's being thick skinned so much as it is keeping things in
perspective. And the way you put it..."...nothing I would take to
personally" was like a breath of fresh air for me.
I look forward to playing all the same people I've enjoyed playing in
the past when I have more time. I'm not overly concerned about
things I can't control (if someone is using a program).
This post is not to take sides on who is right and who is telling the
truth. It is also not to invalidate the concerns or feelings of those
involved. I just felt I should post something on the subject because I
care about the people involved.
