Given what he was describing, I was figuring he might not even have an AGP slot and the 5950 can be found in a normal PCI (not PCI-E) as well, but this is harder to get.
Also remember that most boards that have an AGP slot that will support up to a certain xX will still work with cards that have a higher x, but will only work to the max that board sup ...[text shortened]... x4 out of the card. There are a few anomolies where this is not the case, but it is not common.

Generally MB makers color the slot differently as well (the PCI slots are black and the AGP is green, for example) Also, on the MB itself there is a silk screen of the slot type RIGHT next to the slot, most often in white silkscreening.

Of course, if you have the manual, you could check it as well. It would tell you if you have one.
Originally posted by KnightWulfeSo I may have an AGP slot, but I will probably have a PCI slot, right? Which is better for a video card?

I am SURE you will have a PCI slot, the normal card you plug into a PC is PCI format. Nic card, soundcard, modem card, whatever....the video is the one with the options, and the options are based on the motherboard.
Originally posted by SuzianneThat's not true, the higher end models, 6600 gtx and upwards are available as AGP x8, my 6800 Ultra is, for example. Regardless of this, I'm merely warning him that the lower end ones are likely to be more suitable for his system. I'm guessing if he has an inbuilt graphics processor, then he's not got a great system to play with.
Not true.
AGP x8 is not a standard (at least among nVidia cards), but AGP x4 is.
All nVidia cards come in either PCI-E or AGPx4. Even my 7800 GTX came in PCI-E or AGPx4, no other choices (except for SLI, hehe). I got the PCI-E version, but even a friend who recently got a 6800 GS only had PCI-E or AGPx4 to choose from.
The biggest thing to watch ply.
But I agree that even a 5950 will be quite a step up from the onboard intel graphics...
ATY, could you give us a full spec of your PC? It might help.
EDIT: Also, here's some more info with pics to show you what they look like etc: http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/agpcompatibility.html

I was also gearing towards what type of system he seems to have.....

The OS (Windows) makes no difference with this, we just need the hardware specs, really.
Originally posted by StarrmanPimp. What would you recommend? Can I get a decent one for under $100 that will play all the games out there without problems? How about under $200?
Okay, well apparently it's an AGP x8 support with 2 spare PCI slots, so the world is more or less your oyster. Go for the best card you can afford
