Phil Hartman of my hometown Brantford, Ontario is the man you're thinking of.
Thanx Darvl... Phil Hartman is one of my favorites ever. News Radio was great!

Andy Kaufman was great... I just love someone willing to do something no one thinks is funny, and call it comedy!

That leads us to Jim Carrey, one of the greatest comedians alive.

I was never a big fan of Kaufman's. His ideas were great and his ideas were genius, but I can't say that I've laughed out loud at him many times.

Chris Rock, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Rodney Dangerfield and Woody Allen would have to be my personal favourite stand-up comedians.

Comedy is very much an individual choice. I would go with the following:

Film - Life of Brian / Dr Strangelove (close, not sure which)
Comedian - Bill Bailey / Bill Hicks (for entirely different reasons)

Also worth mentioning Eddie Izzard, who is the funniest person ever not to insult someone, how he can be so funny without any form of malice is beyond me. And he does his routines in both French and English.
I love EWddie Izzard!!!! Not only is he funny, he is very informative! He helped me brush up on my French and my history while laughing!
I would just say anything Monty Python, the Marx bros. definitely, laurel and Hardy, It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world and The Russians are coming.
