which is the greatest comedy film, and the greatest comedian of the past hundred or so years?

EDIT: took out the "of all time" and replaced it with "film" and stuck "of the past 100 or so years" on the end of the question about comedians. as some people were being parnickitty...

dont think there is one ,as benny hill, charlie chaplin, tommy copper, tony hancock, spike milligan, had humour, but how do you judge when thos who have gone before can not get a mention.

I think one of the best standup comedians was Bill Hicks, with him there was no boundery, he didn't just cross the line, he took a dump on it and then crossed it.

Old comedians like charlie chaplin, marx bros etc were ground breaking and genius for their time but they just don't float my boat.

Best comedy film is a toughie.. Maybe some laurel and hardy film. Or dumb and dumber (i've a feeling i'll get shot down for saying that ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Rowan Atkinson - Blackadder (part 3 is my favorite)

Best film has to be 'Life of Brian' - the added bonus of a protest outside when it was on at the cinema.

Comedy is very much an individual choice. I would go with the following:

Film - Life of Brian / Dr Strangelove (close, not sure which)
Comedian - Bill Bailey / Bill Hicks (for entirely different reasons)

Also worth mentioning Eddie Izzard, who is the funniest person ever not to insult someone, how he can be so funny without any form of malice is beyond me. And he does his routines in both French and English.

IMHO few comedians can touch the Goon Show! Simple reason is, because it was radio, you had to put your mind into overdrive to visualise the comments - like riding a brick wall at speed, or folding up Buckingham Palace and replacing it with a cardboard replica.....

"Put the brake on, Min!" "It doesn't suit me, Henry!"

๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

With the advent of TV, the Goon Show died. They tried a few 'visuals', but it just didn't work.

Nevertheless, you can still get the goons on CD, a friend of mine has the whole set!

Best film comedy: The big Lebowski (The life of Brian a close second)
Best TV comedy: Seinfeld
Best stand-up: Bill Hicks

Surely there's no doubt about this?

Stephen Fry's books, Eddie Izzard.

Lots of films. I saw 'The Passion of the Christ' for the second time the other night. The first time I saw it was in a cinema where it was just disgusting. When there are no bans on heckling, though, it's hilarious.

Please, someone give me some help! The show was "News Radio" and I think one of the greatest shows ever. Who was the guy from Saturday Night Live who's wife killed him?

I am racking my tiny little brain here trying to remember.

Kirks... Chapelle is great... I had a thread over at FW no one ever touched. You clowns!

Phil Hartman of my hometown Brantford, Ontario is the man you're thinking of.
