That song by Patsy Cline about walking after midnight, out in the moonlight, searching for you.

Johnny Cash's "Cocaine Blues", obviously.
"Walking After Midnight"

He's more a Dylan-impersonator last I saw him, but this fellow:

www.myspace.com/wittwisebram

has a slightly insufferable but funny protest song called "Here's to the States" in which he amusingly takes the piss out of bad country music. You can listen to it at the above website.

Johnny said "Devil just come on back if you ever want to try again 'cause I told you once you son of a B, I'm the best there's ever been."

Well, I pulled out of Pittsburgh,
Rollin' down the Eastern Seaboard.
I've got my diesel wound up,
And she's running like never before.
There's a speed zone ahead, all right,
I don't see a cop in sight.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.

I got ten forward gears,
And a Georgia overdrive.
I'm taking little white pills,
And my eyes are open wide.
I just passed a 'Jimmy' and a 'White':
I've been passin' everything in sight.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.

Well, it seems like a month,
Since I kissed my baby good-bye.
I could have a lot of women,
But I'm not like some other guys.
I could find one to hold me tight,
But I could never believe that it's right.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.

I.C.C. is checking on down the line.
I'm a little overweight and my log's three days behind.
But nothing bothers me tonight.
I can dodge all the scales all right,
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.

Well my rig's a little old,
But that don't mean she's slow.
There's a flame from her stack,
And the smoke's rolling black as coal.
My hometown's coming in sight,
If you think I'm happy your right.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.

one of my all time favorites:

neil young - old man

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true.

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Heh, funny....never ever thought of Neil Young as a country player. Nope, he's still not a country player. Great song, great performance, but NOT great country song. Buzzzzzzz Thank you for playing. Give that worm a new silk scarf.

I never though of him as a country player either, but that song is a country song, some of his others are folk and most are rock songs.

but if that one isn't country, then dolly parton isn't a country singer either. and neither is johnny cash. jimmy dean's big bad john is not even close to being country! 'jolene' would fit right into neil young's material.

dolly parton - jolene
