(The following is the lead character's reaction when finding a friend of his, whom he hadn't seen for a long time, dressed as a policeman).

I stared at the man.
"Stap my vitals, Stilton," I cried, in uncontrollable asonishment. "Why the fancy dress?"
He, too, had a question to ask.
"What the hell are you doing here, you bloodstained <name removed>?"
I held up a hand. This was no time for side issues.
"Why are you got up like a policeman?"
"I am a policeman."
"A policeman?"
"Yes."
"When you say 'policeman,'" I queried, groping, "do you mean 'policeman'?"
"Yes."
"You're a policeman?"
"Yes, blast you. Are you deaf? I'm a policeman."
I grasped it now. He was a policeman.

The author is unmistakably P. G. Wodehouse.

The removed name must surely be Wooster.

Do I win a prize?

If Rob is right then I will heed your literary recommendations at first chance 🙂.

Indeed it is. Correct on both counts. I had no doubt you would know, but as I thought you were off visiting other climes I posted to see if there were any other Wodehouse fans out there.

Yes.

&quot;Then by all means apply yourself to it. Then you are welcome to stay. But please go to your bedchamber if you want to roger someone.&quot;

Spoken by a fictionalization of Christiaan Huygens. Who's the author?

'Tis a very new book. Poorly reviewed in last Sunday's New York Times.

I am going to attempt to find a half-decent book and post some literature by a very good author. AS soon as I find RoyalChickens posted author...watch this space people!

While everyone is busy scratching their heads at Royal Chicken's quote, how about having a go at this one. It's a little tricky so I might give out a few hints to help people along

Would you eat them in a box?
Would you eat them with a fox?

Not in a box.
Not with a fox.
Not in a house.
Not with a mouse.
I would not eat them here or there.
I would not eat them anywhere.
I would not eat Gre*n Eg*s and H*m.
I do not like them, S*m-I-*m.

First hint: The Author's name has an 'E' in it.

No, he's American. However, many Dutchmen figure prominently in the large novel from which that quote was drawn.
