Anyone else playing this? Like it?
I'm finding it fun, but I'm sure that massive surges of adrenaline to prepare my legs and heart for an attack, when all I am doing is sitting down twiddling the mouse buttons, is no good for me!
I'm up to the bit where you dodge between metal crates to avoid being diced by a helicopter's machine gun and then you walk into a hanger, where you are diced by flying buzz-saws.

Yet again, I am sure I will need to update my vid to play the game... every time a new hot 3d first person shooter comes out I need a better card.
😠
P-
I was really looking forward to Half-Life 2. The original was a fantastic game.
Unfortunately I will not be buying it now due to the absurd on-line authentication.
I am dubious about the purported use of Steam. Further what happens if Valve go broke in six months time?
I understand software piracy is a big problem but I think Valve will have alienated some honest people by their policy with this game. Good luck to them, but they will not get my £40.
Originally posted by PhlabibitI don't think you will. I have a P4 2.53Ghz, 512MB RAM, and a 128MB geForce Ti 4200. HL2 runs pretty good in 1024x768 with all options on (DX8.1 mode, but still). Occasional lag, but I can live with that.

So unless you have a geForce 4 MX or something along those lines you can play it very reaonably.
Of course, if you want the full experience you surely must buy at least a DX9 card.
BTW, Valve will not go broke in 6 months' time. The revenues from HL2 will be very high, and the fact that they made HL2 from the profits of pretty much one game (only the original Half-Life and spin-offs) should also give you some confidence.
Originally posted by John DalmasGood point there, The online authentication may well be a pain for dial-up users, however if you have a broadband connection it is not really noticeable, and if you like you can download the game from steampowered, so you don't need a cd in your computer drive to play it (it takes overnight to download it on 512k broadband).

I have a feeling Valve will be making about as much profit from eliminating piracy as they will lose from putting people off with online validation.

There is an option you can enable in steam to increase the memory heap allocated to half life - I think it reduces the lag.

As for do I like it: absolutely! It's everything as good as the first episode (and better - no Xen-like jumping). The only thing really upgraded is the graphics, but since the gameplay of the HL1 already was near-perfect, that's alright. I haven't finished it yet, but already there were some incredibly designed levels, like the underside of a bridge (absolutely fantastic as the train rumbles over), a buggy ride, hovercraft ride, and whatnot.
Sound is also as good as you expect, with the nice touch that they kept most of the sounds from HL1, so you feel right at home.
BTW, I bought it from Steam, which is pretty slow. I have a LAN connection from my university but it only downloaded at about 80kB/s. The real advantage is that you only pay $49.95, and with the low dollar, that is about 41 euros (including taxes), which is about a third less than you pay in retail here.
The online authentication should be no problem for anyone, as you only have to do it once, and even if you only have a modem you can play it offline thereafter.
