Is this just in Edmonton, or are they less kids every year trick o treating?

Every year we have less and less, and this year we might have had 20 at the most!

I rememeber when we were in Junior High, 12 years ago, we used to go all over the place. Hit the big houses and get huge candy bars, the good stuff. Stay out very late collecting candy, 6pm -11 pm or so. Bring the candy to school and enjoy. There would be at least 100 ppl coming to our house.

Now these kids barely go out, from 7-9 or so, barely get any candy and go back home. What's wrong with em? The weather is much nicer now days then back then and you still only go for 2 hours?

Is this just in Edmonton or also where you live and where do you live?

Perhaps kids eat so much candy all year round these days, that it's not really worth the trouble to go out "trick-or-treat"-ing?

Or their parent are suspiciously religious and won't let them out on the "Devil's" playground?

Or maybe the computer is more fun than dressing up and chasing for the candy that's already in abundance right there at home?

When I was a kid, I had barely heard about Halloween. It's a quite recent development both in Germany and Norway that kids go trick-or-treating. Yesterday they came three times to my door. I think it was only once last year, although I may have slept through some.

When I'm on the computer, I can be whoever I want to be. Every day is Halloween. Today, I'm a construction worker with a handlebar moustache.

I think it's everywhere. I live in southern Ontario and every city I've been in in the last 5 years at Halloween has hardly any kids anymore.

I think it's partly demographics and that parents are paranoid some crazy guy will steal their kids since that's all they see on tv and the news these days. It's sad...Halloween used to be one of the coolest things when i was a kid. We'd be out as soon as it got dark at 530pm and not be home till after 9. We'd come home with a pillow case full of loot

Yes Halloween was wicked back in the day. Even though it would be minus 20 celcius sometimes more we still had fun.

Now the kids are just soft or don't care. Plus there a lot of dumb people out there to watch out for. Stupid people putting poision and stuff in candy.

You know what else is strange. 5:30 everyone's out of their house and in the street till 10ish-11 for the older kids.

Now it's like no one wants to be the first one. Everyone looks out their window and when the see the first kid, then they go outside.

It's like teachers not letting your out till the other class next door get out. The other class teacher has the same policy. Thus, no one leaves early!!

I was talking to my mom about this last night too. They do have much more indoor planned activities for children now than before which most parents choose to participate in over the whole door to door thing.

I have always loved halloween. I still had a good number of kids at the door last night. But I know what you mean about kids not wanting to be the first out and it ended much earlier than it use to. We started right from school and struggled to keep going around 10 pm. And it WAS much colder!

I hope it never dies out. I really enjoy dressing up and making the house as scary as possible. As for parents who fear the bad guys....I have never let my children go unattended. I walk up to the houses with them. So I guess I'm unsure as to the dangers they fear. Also my kids never go to houses that are undecorated. Decorated houses usually means other families with children.

My mother lives in G.P on a main strip and only had 2 kids all night. I couldn't believe it! All the years we went out as kids not one bad thing ever happened to anyone we knew ever. Just another sad statement of how isolated and disconnected communities have become.

Many of the parents are taking their kids to organised events rather than door to door. The media scares everyone to death with some story about drugs in the candy or razor blades in apples. Then after the media educates the criminals they start to copy cat the behavior and it then grows into a real problem. Then you get the movie industry scaring the bejesus out of everyone with the boogie man and there you have it. Kids stay home and watch scary movies, play violent computer games and become the psychotic monsters that everyone is afraid of instead of going out socializing and having fun. Happy Halloween. Whahahahaha.

I've heard that. Here it's about the little ones. The majority of kids that go out are from 2 yrs old to about 11 or 12. But I love when the big kids come around the most. I always make them show me a trick before they get their treats. 🙂
Or at least sing me a song or do a little dance. 🙂
The last of the kids came by around 9pm. Mind you it's a given up here that if you turn out your lights you don't get bothered.

Your one of those huh?

Well this guy tried to make us sing ones for our candy. We sang the usually trick o treat etc... he wanted us to sign another one so we walked away.

He grabbed a handful of candy and chucked it at us and we were near the end of his sidewalk by his car. Some of them hit the car, some missed, we didn't get hit. We walked away, then his wife yelled at him and told him to pick them up before someone fell on them and sued, ah the good legal system right?, so he had to run outside in short and t-shirt and freeze to pick up the candy.

Good days.
