I was curious if anyone has had the pleasure of reading Alexander Solzhenitsyn's One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich. I just picked up this single chapter book and started to read it yesterday and found that it was a complete page turner. I simply could not put it down. What are you thoughts?

read it a long time ago, and really enjoyed it. if you like that, try his 'The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956', an account of his own experiences as a prisoner of the Soviet gulag system, and those of others. it's a longish read, but I couldn't stop til I got to the end.

I have read the book after reading through Archipelago Gulag and found it much more readable. In fact anyone who does not need all the details on the Gulag but more the General impression should read Ivan Denissovitch.

Great little book agreed. But The Gulag Archepelago in English is short. In Russian it is 1800 pages. I read a bit of it In Russian. Way too long of a book though.

Day in the life is a great little gem.

depends on your attention span i guess. but, yes, ID does get the flavour across in a more readily digestible form.

Have you read through all three volumes og Archipelago Gulag?

The attention span is one problem. Lots and lots and then lots more of horrendous tales to digest is another, IMVHO.

i've read the first two, and was hot for the third, but it had gone awol from the library. reading lots of horrendous tales can be hard going, but i figure if someone lived through it to write about it, i can read through it.

Ivan Denisovich is my favourite Solzhenitsyn novel - very readable.
I found Gulag Archipelago harder going. Better, for me, were "For the Good of the Cause" and "Cancer Ward". Might give Gulag another go sometime soon.

If you enjoyed denisovich, I highly recommend 'My Testimony' by Marchenko, a compulsive page turner of the Gulag system in the later years, not easy to find but worth the effort 🙂

The Gulag books were entirely relavent when written. Now, rather than a riveting read I find them more of a historical text.

My favorite of his is August 1914
