That's to be expected. The life of a raptor is hard and under normal circumstances 60%-80% of the youngsters (varies with species and things like prey base) will die before their first birthday. Sorry about your wife's distress; it's a natural occurrence.

At CRC we've had Great Horned Owl babies and Barn Owl babies so far. The orphaned or displaced babies that we get starts to pick up this month and into June.

All birds, and it doesn't matter whether it's a sparrow, eagle, or ostrich, grow to adult size within 3 months. They grow at a fantastic rate. It is a reason why bone breaks when they are nestlings is often fatal; the bone is growing too fast to properly calcify over a break. Birds have to be able to fly or be of adult size to leave the nest and the sooner they are ready the better their chances of survival are (or so they have evolved, it would appear).
