I don't get it. Doesn't look any more realistic to me, just looks over-saturated and slightly over-exposed.

Over Saturated and Over Exposed images still have blind spots in the shadows, with HDR you minimize the places where sub/over exposure burns or shadows the image to no visibility, resulting a more clear overall image, of course this technology is still very young I think.
