everytime I see a car commercial on tv, when the car is rolling forward, the wheels are rolling backwards. I never see this happening in "my world". Why does it happen on TV?

It's an optical illusion caused by the filming or videoing . You see it most noticably in old westerns with the wagon wheels .

How does that make a car look better?

It's not done intentionally . It just turns out that way all the time .

Its called the "strobe effect". When filming, a camera takes x frames a second of the rotating wheel. Therefore, on a segmented rotating object, it appears to be out of sinc with the other continuous parts.

Yup, the strobe effect. Imagine a wagon wheel with one spoke painted red. Say the film camera takes a frame with the red spoke at top dead center (12 oclock), the wheel rotates clockwise until the red spoke is at 1 oclock and it takes another picture, another rotation and another picture at the 2 oclock position and so on. When the film is played back, the red spoke will appear to be moving counter-clockwise.

What if you drank the night before and your brain shuts off for 1/4 second every half second?

Can happen with the naked eye also. Cos believe it or not, the human eye takes frames as well . It is not one continuous image that we are seeing. But many taken over a period of time and all assembled in to what we are seeing. HOW TOO>

I don't know. I think it's a gimmick by the advertisers to draw my attention to it. I much prefer a pretty girl in shorts soapin a car down.

I disagree with the gimmick tehory, but agree whole heartedly with the shorts and soapy water bit.
