I know most of you go through the daily routine of Antiviruses/AntiSpyware/Hijack this etc etc . To end that nightmare, consider using Fedora Linux (http://fedora.redhat.com/) If you are on a low bandwdth connection, for a few pounds you can buy a CD/DVD set. Fedora is given away for free by the well known company Red Hat.
If you insist on using Windows XP, then use firefox browser. It works on this site and all important sites without allowing harmful activex controls. Never use Internet Explorer unless it is to do Windows update.
Most companies/Libraries/Schools/Hospitals are recognising Linux as a cost effective secure solution.

I mean, Linux is Unix and it just doesn't get any better than that 🙂
I don't hate Microsoft or their products. I simply sympathise with those of you going through the daily routine of virus/spyware/malware cleaning. You are free to use any version of Linux or MacOS etc
According to the BBC's site, hackers can now hold files on a Windows PC hostage and demand $200 USD. Hehe but that is pathetic.

I've got a few machines and servers that I use every day.
All but one are on Linux. The non-Linux one is a stand alone that has been running on Microsoft for the last 5 years without a single spyware, malware or virus issue. 😲

- load up internet explorer (enable activex controls) and go surfing on the net. If you are logged in as Administrator it is even better.
- Click on all links you can find. Look for shareware and free downloads.
- Open outlook and click on all attachments. Especially mail from unknown senders. Ahh that movie clip/screen saver install it.
- If you can find mousetrap websites the better. They want you to install something to "have a better browsing experience".
- Ah what ? The site wants to change my connection setting? Allow it to. You will next be billed at £5/min for connecting to the net.
Come back crying and ask for Linux. That is the fate awaiting many folk today.

Correction: Linux is Unix-LIKE, whereas MacosX is UNIX.
Regardless of how close each gets to "The Big Red Book", I would argue that a large monolithic kernel is more Unix (not withstanding some un-unix like system calls) than a micro-kernel with some weird user mode stuff on top.
However, I'm all for Apple's second attempt at a Unix like OS. Their first one was awful.

While I understand your enthusiasm you need to wait until people are ready to try Linux. Many Windows users are very happy with their system.
Many Windows users would absolutely hate Linux as it is today. In fact, there are many things about Linux distributions that I absolutely hate too. It doesn't provide everything for everybody and in my view, that isn't what it's about anyway.

Sure, it makes sense to use FireFox / Thunderbird - I use nothing else, but if you browse like an ass, you will eventually get spyware or a virus on your system.
The problem with PCs running windows is it's just too easy nowadays to buy one, hook it up to the Net and start browsing - if people were better informed viruses and spyware etc. wouldn't spread so fast.
I use Linux for hosting, but both my PC and Laptop run on Windows XP. Hell, I can't remeber the last time I had any spyware or anything worse bugger up my Windows installation, because I follow some simple rules when browsing or downloading.
Naivety and idiocy are the reasons for viruses etc. spreading - not necessarily security holes in MS products.

Perhaps you could get the fires burning again by saying the only reason Linux is more secure than windows is because more people use windows and there's fewer people trying to crack Linux boxes.
That's bound to work, it works on me!!
