Hello fellow RHPers.

I'm organising a trip to Croatia next month. You're welcome to come along, by the by, but very little chess allowed- time will be prioritised for beaches, culture, and babes, in ascending order of importance.

Anyhow, it seems a lovely country. Everyone says it's the place to go, since the Czechs copped onto charging tourists exuberant prices. Beautiful coast, limpid water, islands a plenty, medieval cities, Roman ruins, Croatian babes, in ascending order of importance.

But I don't know anyone who has been there personally, only friends of friends. Have any of you visited Croatia, where did you stay, what do you recommend seeing, any tips at all?

We had a rebuilt touring car once crossing through Croatia. So I don't know where to hotel. I remember horrible food and the worst coffee ever (25 years ago). I found Plitvice very beautiful. It's a national park. 16 or so crystal clear lakes run into eachother by waterfalls. Wild bears nearby. Coastlines are stunningly beautiful, but without watershoes you won't survive. Sharp stones everywhere and, I don't know the english word for it, waterhedgehogs all over the coast. Sandbeaches are hard to find, sometimes a concrete platform.

Blimey- a few things to think about there. So the beaches are pretty bad, then? Hmm. Still, if you're driving (might rent a car) you could probably find a decent one, don't you think?

If I do go, I'll try and check Plitvice out. Sounds lovely. I suppose bad food and coffee are to be expected. What about the medieval towns?
And the beautiful Croatian babes? Would you say it were a good place to go to enjoy one's newly found single status?

Friendly people?

Was in that part of the world for three weeks a couple of years ago. As you suggest the number of toursits has obviously increased hugely in the last 5 years or so, though they largely seem to stay in the Dubrovnik, Split and on the island of Korcula, though it should put you off a brief jaunt to these places. Certainly plenty of fun to be had in Dubrovnik, if you know what I mean. Other than that some of the smaller islands are great. I stayed on Hvar for a few days, which was pretty peaceful and beautiful. As already stated, Plitvice NP is also a great place to gt away from things.

Is also very easy to go into Bosnia from Dubrovnik or Split; Sarajevo certainly being worth a visit.. Spent hours sat in the old square drinking Turkish coffee, people watching and listening to the imams intoning the call to prayer. After the recent trials there I found all of the people incredibly warm and the mix of cultures is fascinating. Can also while away a few hours in one of the squares playing chess with the old men, if you so wish.

Enjoy the holiday wherever you end up, and you can always PM me if you want any more info.

I went to Slovenia (just north of Croatia) and can't recommend that highly enough - small place but gorgeous - Lake Bled, Piran, Skocjan Caves (biggest in Europe!), Triglav National Park, and the capital Ljubljana is very scenic. Might be worth hopping over the border if you have spare time.
