Jock can be used as a derogative term.
Jobby, although I see you are probably using it (as his name is Jobsworth) as a friendly form of his name, means "shit" in Scottish.
So, where you are basically saying: "I am sorry Jobsworth, I meant no offense." He probably read: "I am sorry you shit. I meant no offense."
God, I love miscommunications 🙂
Just PM him and explain, I'm sure he'll see the funny side of it.

unfortuanately here i sympathise with the guy playing white, you seem to be the rude one. I spent 4 months sailing with a scottish that hated when people would refer to him as 'jock' He probably has been called alot of them names in his life time and does not like it. would you like it if he was playing a game with you and just came out with: how ya doin ...[text shortened]... "sorry i offended you i was just joking" you instead came out with another derrogaritive term.
I, or perhaps we in America, tend to add "y" to the ends of names and words as a term of endearment.
I never would say or do anything purposely to insult or hurt someone. I am very embarassed to think that I insulted jobsworth, and I will apologize immediately. I also apologize to anyone out there who may have been offended by what I said.
Gosh, Zoe, I wish we could all be as wise as you are. I am sure you have never accidentally insulted anyone in your life. (refers everyone to a nimber of Zoe's posts)
Sorry! Sorry! oops. looks like we are about to have a cat fight on our hands.
😀

why should she insult anyone accidently if she does it so well inpurpose...
At any rate, I am sorry for all my rudeness, ignorance, and whatever else anyone wishes to add to the list.
btw, my bf and I had a bit of a problem with soul mate. He is Welsh, and he said a girl he knows is a soul mate, which to him , means someone who thinks the same. To Americans, it means the one whith whom you are meant to live your life. Ahh the language barriers between the English speakers and .....the English speakers.....😀

Cat fight, why would i need to cat fight when i can fight properly.

Not to butt in, but I think the point here is she didn't know she was offending the second time, she didn't know what jobby meant it was just a friendly nick from his username. She didn't do it knowingly, and has said she is apologizing right away now that she knows what's up. sheesh.

I appreciate your support. I had just started a game with bookworm as well, and I said "hi, Booky" He laughed and said he liked it. I told him I thought it was better than "wormy" :-)
The trouble with the online world is that you are dealing with just words; no facials expressions, body language, no vocal inflection. It is very easy to misread what is being said; it is easy to miss the joke or take it wrong. I am sure most of us have had our feelings hurt or gotten angry from something said to us. But if we take the time to talk it out, the situation can be cleared up.
Another interesting part of living in the world wide online community is the language barrier. We all have sayings, or ways of aroganizing our sentences that are a bit different. In UK "taking the piss" has a very different meaning from the US use of the term.
In the US, the use of the term "nigger" has changes over the years. It is a word which white people do not ever use unless they mean to be very insulting to an African American. However, African Americans sometimes use the word with each other. It is a matter of culture and racial unease in this country.

Actually choc pudding is better to wrestle in.
Thanks all for you help with my lack of communication skilss.
BTW, I am now all made up with my new scottish friend, and we are playing at chess once again.
