I got this email yesterday.Being born in 1972,I thought it was funny. It also has some truth in it.I had to translate it from dutch though, some parts I had trouble getting the message across.Sorry,I tried my best.

This is a story for everyone born before 1980.
Kids today are overly pampered. If you were born in the 50's,60's or 70's,then,looking back, you should be amazed you're still alive.
How DID WE SURVIVE!?

When I was a kid,
-we sat in the car without seatbelts on and no airbags
-our beds were painted in bright colors with paint that contained lead and cadmium
-we could open every bottle in the medicine cabinet just like that.Even the bottle of bleach posed no problem
-doors and windows were a continueous threat to our fingers
-when we rode our bycicles,we never wore a helmet
-we drank water right from the tap,not from a bottle
-we raced in soapboxes and only found out we had no brakes when we were allready going downhill. After a few bumps and bruises we could handle that perfectly
-in the morning,we went outside to play
We stayed out all day and only returned home when it was getting dark. Nobody knew where we were, yet nobody got worried, and we didn't have cellphones on us
-we suffered from cuts,we broke our bones and teeth, and the windows of the neighbours, yet nobody got sued
It were just accidents, and the only one to blame were we
Do you remember such 'accidents'?
-we got into fights, and hit each other in the head.We had to learn to deal with that, adults couldn't be bothered with it
-we ate cookies, bread with lots of butter,we drank coca-cola and yet,we didn't get fat
-we shared our drinks with friends, drinking from the same bottle or glass, and nobody died because of that
-we did not have playstation,nintendo,x-box,videogames,64 tv-channels,video's and dvd's,surround-sound,own tv set
computer nor internet chat rooms
We had FRIENDS.We simply stepped outside and met each other there. We went to our friends homes en rang the doorbell,or just went inside through the backdoor
AND we did all that without our parents knowing it!Nobody took us there and nobody picked us back up
How the hell was it possible!!??
-we invented our own games, with sticks and tennisballs
-with those sticks we almost never poked someone's eye out
-we ate worms, and they didn't live forever in our stomachs
-when we played soccer on the streets, you could only join if you were good enough
If you were not good enough, you had to learn to deal with the disappointment
-some kids were not so good at school as others, they failed and had to do that grade again
This did NOT lead to parents causing emotional scenes at the school, nor did it lead to a change in the 'graduation norms'(translation?)
-sometimes our actions had consequences...that was normal and nobody could escape it
-if one of us broke the law,it was normal that our parents did NOT bail us out of jail
On the contrary, they AGREED with the police!Imagine that....

Our generation has produced many problemsolvers and inventors, who were prepared to take risks.
We had freedom,we neglected,we had success and we took responsibility....
All those things,we could handle very well.
You too,are part of that generation.

Be happy!Be proud!

All my parents could be sure of was that I was inside a 50mile radius each day 😵
