How does one become a grand master?

Kinda like this: U have to have a USCF rating of some height- I think
AROUND 2400 and then compete in tournaments of an average
strength around there two.........you have to win those and gain GM
norms.......if you get three of them you're in! Hehehe......sounds so
darn easy.........except that whole winning part.........

It is not easy...after I earned my NM floor I have since basically given
up on ever getting that IM or FM title...much less the GM title.

Too much work...and when you are married and have family there is
no time for all of the studying and playing that you have to do.

Dave, would you be able to give us an idea of what the mechanics are
for going through these various titles are? I don't even know what FM
stands for, so you can be sure I'm asking purely out of curiousity, and
that I don't actually intend to try any of this of course...

NM = National Master - 2200 - No norms!
FM = FIDE Master - What's the difference between this and above?
IM = International Master 2300 ?
GM = Grandmaster 2400

Well...lets walk through it...Tony who hopped in on this is somewhat
right.

Okay...as you start your process of registering with USCF or BCF or
whatever country you are from...you then start playing in
tournaments..of course when you have time and can afford the entry
fee. Most of these are usually weekend 5 round swisses. After a few
you will be given a "provisional" rating...mine at 8 years old was
actually 1009....after twenty (could be 15) rated games you then get
your true rating.

If you can learn enough and try hard enough then when you get over
2200 you hve the title of NM (National Master)...I finally achieved that
after the NY Open of 98 and a match with an IM in Ohio.

Then to Get the FM (Fide Master) you have to just keep that same
rating but basically play in a few international events with a plus score
in those.

The other two titles I have already talked about but will do again if
people really want to know.

Thanks Dave, that was great, I just wanted to get an idea on how chess rankings could be
consistent internationally...

I can't be the only person here who got that reference to the old joke--
the punch line is "Practice. Lots and lots of practice."
