How many accounts are there on RHP?

I'm tempted to send a dummy account to the bottom of the ratings table to find out, but this
might be viewed as suspicious behaviour.

The total number of all accounts created really doesn't say much
about the number of real users, which I suspect is quite a bit smaller.

yup.
My completely fact free guess is that, after eliminating multiple and
inactive nicks, the number is closer to 5 or 10 thousands active people
playing here, if that.
At one time, one of the Powers that Be (aka chris or russ) posted how
many different nicks had made a move in one week. Much smaller
than the total number of nicks, but I can't remember how large it was.
