You're idea of prison is probably based on movies.

Prison is tough and it is violent but the people who run into problems in prison bring it on themselves.

Drug debt.
Disrespect.
Rats.
Chomos.
Gang BS.
Etc etc.

My size/strength helped but I never crossed the line in there so I survived.

I was also the chess champion everywhere I went and that gave me a leg up as far as respect went.

No.
Most federal prisons are at the top of mountains so no mice.

They take a mountain or a huge hill and cut off the top and put a prison there.
Why?
Cheap land and if you escape you have to go down the mountain which is huge.
A mountain is not all down hill.
You go down then up...then down...then up...etc etc.
So if you escape you basically get caught before you even reach the bottom.
The bus ride can take an hour to reach the top sometimes and there are so many turns some guys puke.

I don't know anything about state prisons.
The feds and state are separated.
Fed prisons and state prisons have different rules and politics.
