I'm just wondering. I'm pretty new here. I like it. I've already ran across some people who have been nice enough to give me pointers here and there. I'm in the middle of a bunch of good games. And yet, I'm near the end of a game with a person that is barely floating above a 900 rating and he or she is WAXING ME worse than anybody ever in my life LOL. Every single move that is made is like HOLY ISHSHH! I'm not saying he or she is cheating. All I am saying is it seems really fishy when I'm playing people in the 1300's that haven't played that well. Anyways, chess is a funny game. I suppose it could just be a whole lot of luck. Either way, I was just wondering if cheating is a problem on this site or if it's rare. Also, anybody have any idea as far as things to watch out for that are warning signs of such actions?

I don`t think it`s a huge problem here, but there have been a few accusations floating about. I shouldn`t let it bother you too much though.

Yeah I'm not stressing it...I could care less about my record and all that stuff...I was just curious...😏

How long is a piece of string?

Also, ratings aren't always a good indication of a player's ability... Like mine, I'm much worse than my rating indicates πŸ˜€

I think if people are cheating, then it is totally only to the detriment of themselves, they may pick up a few rating points here and there, but who cares? Everyone who I've met on this site is here to learn, play better chess and have some fun. Apart from one of my friends who joined solely to beat meπŸ˜›. If you think someone is cheating, just don't play them again. Another reason for someone being better than their rating is that they may just have got womped in a tournament, or been away for a while and been timed out of all their games, so don't jump to conclusions. Best of luck and have fun. If you ever fancy a game just drop me a challenge. I promise I'm as bad as my rating suggests.πŸ˜€

There are a few things you should check before suspecting cheating - first, is your opponent's rating still provisional? If so, then his actual level of play may be higher - the may not doesn't really reflect playing strength accurately early on, with only a few games finished.

Secondly, look at the graph in your opponent's profile - it may be that their highest peaks are much higher than their current rating, and their rating has dropped because, for example, they took a break from RHP, and got a lot of games timed out.

Thirdly, I think that it is possible for a beginner to raise one's game quite quickly to maybe 1300 -1400 level, if they devote time to studying chess, in addition to playing actively. It may be that your opponent is on just such an "intesive chess addiction" phase, and improving fast.

Everybody is making really good points. Like I said, I wasn't accusing anybody; maybe I was suspecting the possibility. I agree with the person that said just don't play them lol, and also that it is to their detriment. I signed up for a year. So I'm here for a while. I just wondered if there had been problems in the past.

This I agree with 100%. Literally anyone can be a highly-ranked player with a strong engine. If it makes people feel good to have a screen name appear in the top 20 of a Web site, fine. This site is about enjoyment, after all. Paid enjoyment for a number of us. If your life is so mundane that you need that kind of positive affirmation, I'm not going to get excited about it. I just won't play you anymore.

To use myself as an example, I was rated in the 1200s for quite a long time on this site (just look at the graph in my profile) because I played a lot of games at once while at work. But once I decided to slow down and really study mid-game positions and opening theory, my ranking positively skyrocketed. However, I was NEVER accused of cheating. Why? I can only speculate that it is because I didn't suddenly sport an 1800+ ranking. The only reason I cracked 1500 was because I had numerous timeouts against a few strong players who retired from RHP and I never made a secret of this.

MOST of the people here don't cheat. And if someone does, look at their moves and try to see why they were made. You can still learn from egregious losses, engine or not.

First, great new avatar πŸ˜€
Secondly, a lot of people say 'who cares about rating, I'm here for fun' etc. Which is fine for them but there are some players on the site who take their chess rather more seriously.
I think it's fair enough if they don't want to play cheats - none of the serious OTB players with real FIDE ratings would play cheats.

I have to agree with Varg on that avatar. Chun Li, do us proud (that is Chun Li off Street Fighter, isn't it?)
BTW, I also agree with you on the prevalence of cheaters, or whatever the hell you were talking about.
Timeouts are probably the most common type of cheating, isn't it?

It isn't cheating to time out people. If they're on holiday it's inconsiderate, that's about it.

Please explain why you consider timing out an opponent cheating!

When you do, consider this, when you arrange a game against an opponent, you agree to a time limit for each move, not the total time for the game, whether it be 3/7/14 days. If your opponent fails to move within this space of time, it is their problem, so you are perfectly intitled to claim the available timeout.

If you were playing an opponent across the board, would you consider yourself the cheat if your opponent failed to make the alotted amount of moves in the time required?...
