Ok, so to piss off my little sister, I stole one of her teen magazines and read it (at least part of it). They were going on and on about this new band, "Tokio Hotel" which is basically 2 15-year olds, one 16-year old and one 18-year old. The 15-y.o.s look kinda wild (one with dreadlocks and the other with a hairstyle that reminds me of the singer from The Rasmus), and the mag was debating whether they are authetic or just a bunch of students who try to come across as rockers (see http://www.toolia2.de/user/tokio-hotel/ for pics).
Anyways, sure enough, the song went from zero to place 1 in the German charts. So, I was curious. I downloaded this great song, "durch den Monsun", on Limewire. I was expecting something Good Charlotte-like, maybe Greenday-ish, but was unprepared for what came when I clicked play.
Now, how to best describe it... the singer's voice has not broken yet, he sounds like he's 12. Music itself is a bit like Savage Garden or the softer songs from Matchbox 20 (ie very smarmy and definately not "rock".), the melodie is dull and repetitive, and the lyrics... I feel the need to translate this "rock song" for your benefit:

Ich muss durch den Monsun (I need to go through the monsoon)
Hinter die Welt (behind the world)
Ans Ende der Zeit bis kein Regen mehr fällt (to the end of time until the rain stops falling)
Gegen den Sturm am Abgrund entlang (against the storm, along the abyss)
und wenn ich nicht mehr kann denk ich daran (And when I'm about to give up I think of itπŸ™‚
Irgendwann laufen wir zusammen (Sometime we'll flow together)
Durch den Monsun (through the monsoon)

Dann wird alles gut (Then everything will be fine)

Ein halber Mond versinkt vor mir war der eben noch bei dir (half a moon sinks before me, was it with you just a moment ago?)
Und hält er wirklich was er mir verspricht. (And will it keep it's promises?)
Ich weiss das ich dich finden kann (I know it can find you)
Hör deinen Namen im Orkan (I hear your name in the hurricane)
Ich glaub noch mehr dran glauben kann ich nicht (I think I couldn't believe in it more than I do now)

Weil uns einfach nichts mehr halten kann (Because nothing can hold us anymore)
Durch den Monsun (through the monsoon)

Hey

Hey

Ich kämpf mich durch die Mächte (I fight against these powers)
hinter dieser Tür (behind this door)
werde sie besiegen (will conquer them)
Und dann führn sie mich zu dir (And then they will lead me to you)

Dann wird alles gut (Then everything will be fine)
Dann wird alles gut (Then everything will be fine)
Wird alles gut (Everything will be fine)
Alles gut (everything fine)

Ich muss durch den Monsun (I need to go through the monsoon)

Durch den Monsun (through the monsoon)

Dann wird alles gut (Then everything will be fine)
Durch den Monsun (Through the monsoon)
Dann wird alles gut (Then everything will be fine)

(the lyrics make as little sense in German as they do in my translation...)

Hey, I found the video: http://mms.sonix.de/universal/rock/tokiohotel_durchdenmonsum_60.wmv
I mean, do you call this a rock song??? What has Music come to? *sits and cries* It's not even a real love song! And yet there are tons of people who go out and buy this song which is so bad it hurts the ears. Am I the only one who thinks this is really really sad?

As a rule any band promoted via a teen magazine, that gets straight to number 1 will be complete dross. If you are lucky they will be one-hit wonders and you'll never see them again.

If you want the best music of any genre you need to go beyond the media hype.

well usually I look at the top 10 singles and go "wow, I know, like... 2 of these bands/songs?", but I felt I had to see what the hype is about. I was expecting it to be bad, just not that bad! That wasn't the entire text btw, I just couldn't be bothered to translate the first part πŸ˜‰

Considering that "Schnapy" song and how long that stayed at number 1 in Germany... I'm not suprised 😞
