I write political analysis for a newspaper and yesterday I decided to show my colors... calling the current president, the presidential candidate and the president of the right wing party 'fascist pigs'...
I've been writing for newspapers for more than 6 years but never received as much 'hate mail' as today, including one that literally states 'I hope you die'...
I enjoy receiving e-mails from readers, no matter praise or criticism, but so heated hate mail is new for me and I have mixed feelings... how can someone wish someone else's death over a political debate?... how do you guys deal with hate from others?
Opinions please

"Whilst my death, as that of all other humans, is inevitable, I thank you for informing me that your desire rests in the continuance of the cycle of life. Hope is a strange thing, it is like a rope hanging down a well, a branch near a quicksand pit, a spoon at hand when the sauce on your meal is too liquidy to get up on a fork. Unfortunately I fear in this case your hope is misplaced. My death offers you no utensils for the retrieval of a tasty topping, nor respite from sinking below the horizon. I suggest that it would be better placed in application to your own existence, since my own death is but a natural course of things, why waste it afterall?
I do so hope that you find the time, in between writing death threats, to try out hope in a better and more constructive way.
Yours hopefully"
Or words to that effect.

Originally posted by Freddie2006Well, quite briefly I said that the political campaign aired by the right wing party, calling the socialdemocrat candidate a danger for the country and suggesting that everybody who is not with them (the conservatives) is against them, is fascist and proper of dangerous zealots and that if one single drop of blood is spilled against the socialdemocrats, it will be their fault. Oh, yeah, I also called the candidate a political dwarf and an ignorant... and I called the president inept for openly supporting his candidate instead of working as president [laws forbid the president from campaigning for or against anyone during election time]... at the last paragraph, I stated: If the right wing candidate wins the election I will not return to the country 😳
Can you give us an English summary, more exactly what you wrote?
15% of the e-mails criticize quite decently my points of view... in 80% of them you can find a variety of gems such as "arrogant", "we don't need you", "f**k you", "scumbag", etc. and 5% of the e-mails are really straight, one of them wishing my death 😲

But, regarding your message, you didn't make it clear if you were required to respond to the hate mail, or if you just wanted some advice on how to deal with it. So here's my best attempt to help you:
If you don't have to respond to the letters then just throw them away and erase the images from your mind. Every adult knows that the world is full of people who are ignorant, arrogant and just plain stupid.
So throw those suckers away and never look back. 😵
If you need to respond to the letters then that's a much more difficult task. The key point to respond to hate mail in public is to not attack the person who sent it to you, but to lay down a foundation of factual evidence that supports your point. If you are really good you can even insert a little jibe that shows the ignorance of your attacker w/o mentioning his/her name. 😵

I recently heard a roast of Daniel Carver, grand dragon in the Ku Klux Klan. He was roasted by blacks, Jews, Lesbians, white women who sleep exclusively with blacks, gays, etc. Everybody just ripped him to him good, but the one who left him completely at a loss for words was Gilbert Godfried (a Jew) who started telling jokes making fun of his own ancestry. Carver had to concede, "well, there's one Jew that I like."
