The best way to improve your rating is to improve your skill, by
playing and learnign from better player, studying chess strategies, etc.
Now! If rating is all you care about, Create a second account and play
yourself and lose to your primary account. You'll get a higher rating on
your primary account and it will give players like me a greater point
win when I play you.
I agree with you. Sure it is fun to see your rating go up, but it is even
more fun to see how your game is improved. I have learned a lot
from a book by Edward Lasker called Chess: The Complete Self-Tutor.
He uses a different way to teach you chess strategies. He have a text
about what he wants to learn you, showing an example than giving
you a new example and gives you a few suggestion. You have to pick
the correct one to go to next lesson. You will probably find it on your
local library. I did and I am living in Sweden.

I say, "sod the books and just play". Never read a chess book in my
life.....haven't got a clue what you would call any of my opening
statergies......I'm having fun and not doing so badly apart from being
in the process of having my arse kicked by "Satri_what's his
face".......good of him/her to play us mere mortals though.....
