How to study a tactics book?

I'm new to red hot pawn and somewhat new to chess so if this has been asked before I apologize.
I'm confused on how I should study a tactics book.
In the book it says to solve the position and move on to the next one....
So does that mean I should look at the diagram and solve it or do they mean I should use a chess set for each problem?
It doesn't say anything in the Introduction of the book(The complete chess workout)
Any strong players have any advice?
