I hate Alities.

I hate Alities.

General

There seems to be a strange, and infuriating trend here in Ireland, and i was wondering if it's infected any other countries. It seems, that there are those (media figures seem particularly fond), who think that they sound more intelligent if they take a word, and add "ality" on the end........STOP DOING IT. YOU ARE A MORON, AND YOU LOOK STUPID.

The main culprit is "criminality". People come on the TV or radio, thinking that they are the dog's nads when they say things like "the man, 34 was taking part in Criminality", or "there seems to be a rise in Criminality", or some other such junk.............We have a word in the English Language for criminality, it's "Crime". Stop it you morons.

The other daty, i heard a sports commentator talking about a team as "using Physicality". Nnnnh 😞 Three time in one interview he used the word "Physicality", then said "they are quite Physical".

This is my new personal bugbear, people trying to sound brainy when they are just taking part in Retardality.

Interesting post, Huck. There's a kind of subtle version of media 'non-speak' developing in the states also but you need to listen for it.

Edit: 'Retardality' 😀

I share your discomfort with language mutilation, one that springs to mind instantly for me was a wannabe wordsmith on national T.V. who uncorked "illegalitarian activities" it made my teeth itch.🙂

Wondering if this conspicuous posturing might be 'political correctness' taking itself to the next level. Both seem to worship the impersonal.

since it seems to spring from liberals i will have to say it should be understood as banality.

Anyone interested or concerned with the effects of manipulation/restriction of language should brush up on their Orwell. The hyper-sensitivity towards words, particularly in modern American culture, is beginning to border upon the ridiculous.

Good point, Flea. Certainly true that words are powerful and that an unacceptable agenda cleverly couched in language may be palatable.

Double plus ungood! 😠

In addition, Paul Fussell, in Class, discussed the tendency of the insecure to use as many syllables as possible in an effort to give the illusion of importance and gravitas to their speech.

So criminality isn't in the dictionary?

Just because you (and possibly other users) don't know the difference, doesn't mean it's not there.

Is it Fussell's intention to insinuate that an inordinately polysyllabic manner of self-expression is potentially indicative of auto-uncertainty?

In the footnotes he also observes that self assured folks, secure within the relaxed comfort of their manhood or feminity, often use 'doh'.

Hmmm....must've missed that one. I'll go back and look for it. 🙂
