I saw Waits in 1976, opening for Janis Ian. He staggered out on stage, suitcase in hand, sat down at the piano, and made you forget about wanting to see the main act.
From a web site:
Thomas Alan Waits (born 7 December 1949) is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor. Waits has a distinctive voice, described by one critic as sounding "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car."

I listened to him today on my ipod. He was singing "I hope I don't fall in love with you." Good song.
