It all depends on the ale. A nice dark malt ale with just enough honey added at the end to condition it, can taste awesome.

Usually, yes. But there is one honey beer which I actually like, every once in a while. You can just about taste the honey in the background, instead of - as usual - it overpowering the entire thing. Unfortunately (for you, anyway) it's Dutch, and I don't think you can get it overseas. It's called Budels Honing.
