@badradger saidI would put watching Documentaries on the telly above chess, mainly history and science. In fact I usually have to drag my sad self away from the telly to grudgingly make some moves.
I reckon most of us on here are chess fans , but have any of you got something that you like more or = to chess,,,, sex dont count/ Me its Horse Racing I have followed the Ge Gees since I was about 10 my Dad used to put bets on for me.
I’d put it in a par with my Xbox and annoying the dog.
@kevcvs57 saidThen why even bother playing chess if it is such a bother to you?

I would miss it if it wasn’t there but I’m just admitting that it can be a bit of a chore sometimes. Once your committed to 30 or so games it’s bound to clash with something else in your life.

@kevcvs57 saidIt is as simple as making a decision you can play 3/7 games so you don't have to ever worry about time, and don't take on any more games than you can handle. I do see what you mean about character building.

@great-big-stees saidLOL@ Stees! 😉
There's something else? 😲
He may not be retired as you and are and have lots of time, you don't even have to be at home to make moves though. I think more a time thing in his case.

@very-rusty saidThere's a real character building in the town next to ours...it's eight sided.

@great-big-stees saidDitto!
Golf...oh, and beer too (but beer, only in moderation of course). 😛
But no beer on the course anymore. The "cart girls" started interfering with my putter.
@very-rusty saidIt was an old barn that someone bought and took it apart, numbering every piece, and moved it to a vacant lot in the town, turning it into a very "chic" restaurant/small hotel.

@great-big-stees saidSo it was combined buildings which gave it the 8 sides! 😉

@badradger
I play chess a lot these C 19 days, like one minute on Lichess. It gives me a measure of how fast I can think for an old fart.
That and I love composing music, have 123 tracks now on Soundcloud and I am finishing a power supply mod on a 1000 watt amateur radio amplifier.
A very old Collins 30L1 to be exact..
So talking on the radio to folks around the world is a kick. Talk about socialization at a distance......
@badradger saidMy grandfather was a jockey but he died before I was born and I had never been to a horse race until a couple of years ago when I briefly dated a trainer.
I reckon most of us on here are chess fans , but have any of you got something that you like more or = to chess,,,, sex dont count/ Me its Horse Racing I have followed the Ge Gees since I was about 10 my Dad used to put bets on for me.
One day, I showed up at a race decked out with hat and heels, sunglasses and binocs, and $100 in my handbag For wagering. My friend spied me from the paddock and directed me to his personal box seat telling me to order anything I desired at his expense.
On my way to the third level, I stopped to make my wagers, completely clueless of how or what I was betting on...My friend joined me briefly, suggested meeting the horses and dinner after the races and then returned to attend to his horse in the last race...which I had bet on...
Because I didn’t understand that a horse doesn’t have to place first to pay out, I thought I have lost my entire $100. When my friend asked me how I had done, I told him that I had lost it all but that I had a great time.
He asked to see my ticket and when he compared to his score card, he started laughing, ant told me, “Sweetheart, take your ticket over to that nice lady in that booth over there and she will give you money.”
I had more than doubled what I had arrived with and my friend could hardly believe that it was my first races, let alone my first wagering.
@badradger saidI play blitz (on another site) most evenings.

Try and play some OTB quick play tournaments when I can.
Gave up Bridge as it clashed with tabl-tennis night.
Gave up table-tennis when I had shoulder problems.
Children's activities take up a lot of my time and I'm on various committees to do with that.
My real passion is dance but sadly we don't have as much time for that as we used to.
Still enjoy cooking.
