Roger Ebert was full of cræp when he said "ending is much too neat..- and damaged the rest of the film".
It's about Dream Lover movie, ingeniously written and directed by Elia Kazan's son Nicholas.
Madchen Amick is fatal girl who sends James Spader into Cuckoo's nest and that part is almost unbearable.
And then Spader conceives both revenge and getaway.
I guess in all American theaters spectators applauded enthusiastically after the movie!
Ending---> He strangled her!
