I'm gonna be a valet. I'm not even 18 until June, but I'm going to be driving other peoples $100,000+ cars (It's at a country club...) and I'm pretty terrible with manual, just practiced on my friends today (only second time I've driven one) and it took me a couple of tries to keep from stalling. Would you trust me in your Benz?
Originally posted by cmsMasterI'll park the Benz myself, but I'll let you park the moped if you promise to be careful.

I got pretty good with not stalling by the end, even if it started to sputter i was able to save it and keep it from stalling. The thing that's going to really mess me up is doing it on a lot of different cars because the clutch is going to hit at different places - and the fact that I'll be nervous doesn't help.
Hey cmsMaster, one of my good friends is a vallet and parks expensive cars and such. Just be aware, there are some expensive cars that reverse isnt in the normal spot. Hes told me horror stories of people breaking the shifter in some way because they did it wrong. Not to scare you, just be aware of it. Ohh, and have fun in those cars.

5 gear:
135
24R
6 Gear (Usually):
R-135
246
Could be an issue thinking you're in reverse when you're really in 6th....

Originally posted by wormwoodI'm starting flat, so it shouldn't be too bad. It seems to help when I 'hold' the clutch and accelerate evenly until it starts to rev too much, then I let out a little more and it usually hits there.

Originally posted by wormwoodI don't quite get what you mean. On the car I was driving today though you really had to force it to the left to get it into reverse, which made me nervous that I was going to break something. 😕
not always. but you can't force the stick into wrong gear unless the car stands almost still.
I also had a problem telling which gear I was in - i.e. 1st vs. 3rd.

you'll have to really ram it before there can be any real damage, but be gently nevertheless.
Originally posted by cmsMasterOn a 5-speed 1st vs. 3rd is easy. If you take it out of gear and let go of the shifter, it will line-up where 3rd is straight up. At least all the 5-speeds I've driven work that way.
