As a european (not necessarily with a capital E) experience suggests that democracy cannot be imposed and must, instead, rise from within. Witness the velvet revolutions of Czechoslavakia, Georgia and, let us hope, Ukraine - a society cannot be transformed over night.
Bushes re-election also highlights the extent to which Britain is a secular nation - religion, to all intents being divorced from politics (a point on which I believe the US constitution is quite explicit).
