Probably the point is that gasoline is an explosive?

In the German law on handling chemicals (Chemikaliengesetz) non-certified people are forbidden to handle explosives with the exception of gasoline...
Actually they killed the concept of the Methanol motor because the Chemikaliengesetz won't allow people to handle very toxic substances...but gasonline is an historical exception (as of now)

Yes, also in Oregon.

I believe the logic of the law was that at the time the big oil companies were wiping out independent service stations by eliminating them and setting up their own self serve stations. To that end, there are a sizable number of independently owned service stations in Oregon.

The fact of the matter is, though, that the companies have a lot of other ways of strangling independents if they want to, such as dictating retail pricing of their gasoline. A good many stations went out of business when gasoline went over $4.00/gal here, because service stations were contractually obligated to set prices at a certain amount over wholesale (often 3 or 4 cents/gal) but credit card transactions are on a percentage basis so they we losing money - massive amounts of it. Not all survive.

Gasoline prices are reasonable here and if it provides a job for someone then I have no problem with it.

Ironically, just about every airport here has a self serve station. That's right, I can pump my own gas in my plane but not my car.

So one day I will go to a McDonald's and will have to have one of the employees feed me?

Where will it all end? I will have to pay homeless people to park my car?

Bad analogies. You might see a law that forces stores to have cashiers instead of scanning and bagging you own goods; that is a better analogy.

I wish they would bring that law to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada!

I thought it was mere courtesy, obviously not...some good folk of NJ have had issues loading their cars with fuel perhaps, one bad incident and it becomes a third party liability requiring legislation. Furtherance of the 'nanny state' comes to mind 🙁

pumping gas is small potatoes .... why should people be allowed to apply their own toilet paper?
