I'm a air line pilot. Tomorrow you'll be taking my plane. Only 42,000 people died last year in my plane. Are you still going to fly?

Hmmm. I think this is a sneaky loaded question. After people answer you're going to pull out a bizarre and shocking statistic.

So, I'll bite. Statically speaking, 42,000 people isn't that many compared to the amount that die globally each year.

Yep, I'll fly.

Have you perfected the tail-first crash landing, so that you yourself live to fly another day? Or do you open a secret valve that lets the air out of the plane, after having cunningly emptied the passengers' emergency air mask bottles? Or is it poisoned peanuts that you brandish?

Why is the pilot still alive? Not only that, why does he still have his license? liscense.

Statistically speaking, 42,000 may be a small percentage of those flying, but it is a lot of flights for one pilot. Thats 420 flights containing 100 passengers each. Obviously, this is a trick question.

Maybe the year is 1945, and perhaps this pilot was busy carting around soldiers all last year. It was never stated that the people died while in flight.

They didn't die of embarrassment did they? Nothing like that?

i shall not fly after taking your plane, because i don't have a pilot's license and i don't want to go anywhere anyway. not even to the corner store!
i might try to sell your plane after taking it though since i will not have any use for it.

in friendship,

Lol. Let me restate this...

Pretend I'm a pilot. Millions of americans fly on my plane every day. Last year, 42,000 of them died (not including the people I ran over). Now, tomorrow the majority of you are going to fly on my plane. Are you still going to take it?

(and who cares how I killed them; point is they're dead and I'm not)

if the alternative were walking 4000 miles, yes.

according to http://www.driveandstayalive.com, 42 000 americans died on the roads last year, so I'm guessing that is the 'airline' you're talking about. i live in london, england, so don't feel it necessary to own a car - but i do travel on your 'airline' everyday by public transport, so hey - I'll risk it ;-)

Good job. I was wondering when someone would figure it out. 😀

Good answer Edward..........but surely at some point you may want to leave the smoggy confines of London and visit countryside (say the beautiful North)....and there are some really nice roads you may want to drive a automobile on ????

I figured that it was driving deaths you were talking about, but wanted to let you make your point. The big difference between being killed by a pilot and dying driving it that when we are driving we feel that we are in control, not handing our lives into someone elses hands.

It makes me laugh when people talk of the dangers of certain activities (rock climbing, surfing... even some drugs) because they 'killed 7 people last year'. They forget to mention that last year in the UK alone 7 people died putting their socks on in the morning. Where are the anti sock campaigners?

it's andy, not edward - i'm really starting to regret my choice of username now 😕
aye you're right of course, london is horrible. i grew up in the outer hebrides where the air is clear and the roads are magnificent - but that doesn't stop people wrapping themselves round lamp-posts every now and again. i'll stick to my pushbike 🙂

Hehehe. My friend Robs told that to me the other day. But anyways, you get her point.
