Why not just pay for sex. It is cheaper and there is a lot less suffering. It is also cheaper to separate and you don't have to buy those expensive meals and pressies. (or so I am told, not having actually done this myself).

a 27 year old friend of mine is getting married with a 20 year old foreign, well... boy, in just a couple of weeks. they've known each other less than a year. I hope all the best for them, but can't help feeling like they're just stupid. a 20 year old boy doesn't know even himself, how could it possibly work? and how well can you know someone you don't even have a common language with? with time, sure. but they've lived only three months or so in the same country!
then again, my cousin went out with the same girl from the next door neighbour for over 15 years, got married, and divorced after 2 months.
so I don't know, there doesn't seem to be a recipe for success (excluding social pressure. religious communities, past times etc.) I'd guess the best chances would be with being honest about yourself + elbow grease. what do the 'long-timers' think?

We have been together 15 years (prior to the marriage).
